Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 Brings Much Faster CPU/GPU and Big Boost in AI Tasks

Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 (model SM7750-AB), the latest addition to its mid-range chipset lineup. The new system-on-chip is built on a 4nm process and succeeds the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 introduced in 2023. The updated platform brings measurable performance improvements across central processing, graphics rendering, and AI task handling.

CPU and GPU Architecture

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 features a revised Kryo CPU architecture arranged in a 1+4+3 configuration. It includes a prime core operating at 2.8GHz, four performance cores at 2.4GHz, and three efficiency cores running at 1.8GHz. Qualcomm reports that the new layout results in a 27% improvement in CPU performance over its predecessor.

Alongside the CPU, the Adreno GPU in the Gen 4 model delivers approximately 30% better performance. The graphics processor also supports multiple high dynamic range formats, including HDR10, HDR10+, HDR Vivid, and HLG. Qualcomm has integrated elements of its Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0 from its Elite Gaming feature set into this generation, intended to optimize frame rates and responsiveness during extended workloads.

AI Processing and On-Device Capabilities

The Hexagon neural processing unit (NPU) inside the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 has been updated to offer a 65% performance boost in artificial intelligence tasks. This enables support for heavier workloads, such as running local versions of generative AI models like Stable Diffusion 1.5, without relying on cloud processing.

Memory, Imaging, and Video Support

The chipset supports LPDDR5 memory and UFS 4.0 storage, aligning it with current flagship standards for memory bandwidth and data transfer speeds. Qualcomm has equipped the platform with a triple 12-bit Spectra image signal processor, capable of capturing still images up to 200 megapixels. It also supports 10-bit photo output and 4K video recording at 30 frames per second.

Connectivity and Wireless Support

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 includes a sub-6 GHz 5G modem, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6.0 support. It also features Qualcomm’s Expanded Personal Area Network (XPAN) technology. For audio, the chip supports both aptX Lossless and aptX Adaptive codecs, aimed at improving audio quality over wireless connections.

Availability

Smartphone manufacturers including Honor, Vivo, and Realme have confirmed that they will release devices powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 soon. These devices are expected to be introduced in the coming months. Specific product announcements and availability dates have not yet been confirmed.
